Why do we "shoot" photos?

It all goes back to the 19th century, when early photographic guns were used to capture images of birds in flight. Even the term snapshot originally described a quick shot taken without careful aim. Those old hunting expressions stayed with photography — and they're still used today. Ready to chase a different kind of shot? Build your own wooden camera and create a timeless handcrafted piece you'll be proud to display.

Made of wood, inspired by the art of photography

There was a time when every photo was made by hand — setting the shutter speed, adjusting the aperture, focusing the lens, and waiting for the perfect moment to press the shutter. Styled after the legendary rangefinder cameras, this wooden DIY model recreates their iconic design in detail, from the lens and viewfinder to the shutter-speed dial and frame counter. The kit also includes decorative film-strip photo inserts, while textured body panels complete the authentic retro look.
133 pieces of vintage charm
The Vintara M is a custom wooden kit by WoodTrick that combines the realistic styling of a classic camera with an enjoyable hands-on building experience. Made up of 133 precisely cut pieces, this project has a START difficulty rating (2 out of 5) and can be assembled in just 1-2 hours. It offers the right balance of challenge — simple enough for first-time builders, yet engaging for hobbyists who appreciate thoughtful craftsmanship. Clear, step-by-step instructions ensure a smooth and satisfying build from start to finish.

What makes this wooden model stand out is its remarkable level of detail. Every major feature of a rangefinder-style camera is carefully recreated and fully functional — the lens rotates smoothly, and the shutter speed dial lets you “set” different exposure values. The lens and viewfinder window are made of acrylic glass (included in the kit). On the back of the camera, you’ll find a film compartment that opens to hold your own photo or a decorative film strip. The set also includes a film strip with 12 frames: 6 sepia illustrations and 6 black-and-white illustrations to color.

This DIY camera is perfect for creative builders and design lovers who appreciate hands-on projects and unique decor pieces. Crafted from sustainable wood and built without glue or special tools, it celebrates the process of making something by hand. When finished, it stands out as a unique interior object that brings character and a personal touch to any space.
